They Called Her Princess Until One CQB Drill Exposed Every Lie-Cherry

They called her princess on her first morning at Camp Pendleton.

They did not say it straight to her face.

Men like that usually preferred the safer kind of cruelty, the kind tossed sideways from behind a locker door or tucked into laughter so they could deny it later.

The CQB facility smelled like CLP, dust, old sweat, and concrete that had held too many hard mornings.

Boots scraped across the floor.

Locker doors slammed.

A paper coffee cup rolled under a bench and someone kicked it aside without looking.

Sarah adjusted the strap of her duffel and kept walking.

The word did not slow her down.

She was thirty-two, compact, quiet, and cleanly put together in the way professional soldiers often are when they have nothing to prove to strangers.

Her hair was pinned into a tight knot.

Her uniform was plain.

The ranger tab on her shoulder did not shout.
