Raymond Doss stood beside the bench and let the sound pass over him.

The morning sun was already hard on the desert, even though it was barely past eight.

The metal benches held the heat.

Dust clung to boots, rifle cases, tires, and the cuffs of jeans.

The air smelled like gun oil, warm gravel, cold coffee, and the faint burnt bite left behind after earlier strings of fire.

Ray had driven four hours to get there.

He had left before dawn in his 1994 pickup with a heater that worked only when it felt like it and a thermos of coffee that had gone bitter before sunrise.

He had not told his daughter where he was going.

That was not because he wanted to lie to her.

Ray did not lie much anymore.

At eighty, a man has either made peace with the truth or spent too many years being hunted by it.

He simply knew she would ask a question he could not answer without opening a door he had kept shut for most of her life.

Why would a man who had not fired a rifle in fifty-one years pay two hundred dollars to attend a long-range precision clinic?

Why would he drive into the high desert with an old canvas rifle case and a face that looked like he had slept badly for a week?
