The Friday I was supposed to pick up Emily, the heat sat heavy over the street before I even turned into Sarah’s neighborhood.

The inside of my car smelled like old coffee, warm vinyl, and the paper custody schedule that had been folded in the cup holder so long the corners had gone soft.

Every other Friday, Emily would be waiting before I finished pulling up.

She was ten, small for her age, all elbows and backpack straps and hair that never stayed brushed after school.
