Christmas morning at Fort Liberty did not sound like Christmas.

It sounded like a generator humming behind a locked fence.

It sounded like tires on wet pavement and a flag rope tapping against a pole in the cold.

I was in my kitchen at 6:18 a.m., holding a mug of coffee I had not taken one sip from, when Main Gate Security called my phone.

The young MP on the line tried to sound professional.

He almost managed it.

“Colonel Sutton?”

“Speaking.”

“Sir, there’s a civilian at the gate asking for you. Says he’s your son.”

I looked toward the hallway where Jake’s old ball cap still sat on the hook by the door from the last weekend he stayed with me.

“My son has gate access.”

The MP did not answer right away.

That pause was the first warning.

“Sir,” he said, quieter now, “you need to come down here.”

I had been in uniform most of my adult life, and if the Army teaches you anything, it teaches you to move before fear has a chance to make you stupid.

I grabbed my jacket, my keys, and that black cap without thinking.

Outside, the base looked washed clean and empty.

Little wreaths hung from the light poles.

The gate lights glowed against a gray Christmas morning.

Somebody had placed a paper coffee cup on the ledge inside the security booth, and steam lifted from it like nothing in the world had changed.

Then I saw Jake.

My son was just inside the barrier with two MPs beside him.

He was upright only because his body had not yet figured out how to fall.

His hoodie was dark in patches.
