The first time Khloe Vance laughed at my job, she did it in my parents’ backyard with barbecue sauce on a paper plate and my brother’s approval sitting all over her face.

It was a hot Maryland Saturday, heavy with charcoal smoke, cut grass, and cicadas screaming from the maple trees.

Mark had just been promoted to regional manager, and Dad had said those two words so many times they started to sound less like a title and more like a family prayer.

When I walked through the gate, Dad raised his beer.

“There she is. Catherine finally made it. Your brother’s big day, honey.”

I smiled because that was what I had been trained to do at home.

Mark stood near the grill in his blue linen shirt, tongs in one hand, accepting congratulations like a mayor on election night.

Khloe stood beside him in a white sundress, blonde hair perfect, diamond bracelet flashing every time she moved.

She gave me an air kiss and said, “You made it,” like I had been granted access to something.

Then Mark said it.

“Cath’s always busy with her Navy thing.”

My Navy thing.

He said it the way people say yoga class or neighborhood committee.

Khloe tilted her head.

“Oh, right. You’re still doing that. Is it PR or recruiting? Mark said you work on messaging or public outreach.”

I looked at my brother.

He suddenly cared a lot about a piece of chicken stuck to the grill.

“It’s more complicated than that,” I said.

Dad laughed.

“Everything sounds complicated if you put enough government words around it.”

A few cousins chuckled because Dad had chuckled first.

Mom gave me the old warning look from behind the potato salad.
