By the time I reached Fort Carson, the afternoon heat had already made the parade field look unreal.

The pavement shimmered under rows of polished black boots.

Flags snapped sharply in the dry wind.

The air smelled like brass polish, hot concrete, sunblock, and the faint leather bite of dress shoes lined up with military precision.

I carried one black leather briefcase in my left hand.

It looked ordinary enough.

That was the point.

No one in my family looked twice at it when I walked toward the reserved seating area.

My mother saw my uniform first.

Her face did not brighten.

It tightened.

She was wearing a cream-colored suit, pearl earrings, and a tiny American flag pin on her lapel, the kind she wore whenever she wanted to look supportive without actually asking what was happening.

My father stood beside her with his hands clasped behind his back.

He gave me the same look he used to give me when I came home from college with honors certificates he thought sounded like bragging.

“Was all that really necessary?” he asked.

His eyes moved over my Navy dress uniform and medals like he wished I had worn something quieter.

“Yes,” I said.

He shook his head once.

“You always need attention.”
