The phone rang once.

Daniel Grant answered before the second ring could come, because fathers learn the sound of their children’s habits the way soldiers learn the sound of weather changing.

Fiona always let it ring twice.

Two rings meant she was walking out of practice with a gym bag on her shoulder, a story on her tongue, and some complaint about homework she did not really mean.

One ring meant something had broken.

At first, Daniel heard only a scrape.

It was the rough squeal of a sneaker dragging across polished wood, followed by the slow bounce of a basketball somewhere close to the phone.

Then came laughter.

Not nervous laughter.

Not the quick, embarrassed laugh of kids messing around.

It was the easy, ugly laughter of boys who believed there would be no consequences.

“Fiona?” Daniel said.

His kitchen smelled like chili, cumin, tomatoes, and the pine cleaner he used on Friday nights when he wanted the house to feel less empty.

Rain ticked against the window over the sink.

The pot on the stove had already been moved off the burner because Fiona hated it when the beans got too soft.

There was no answer from his daughter.

There was only a breathless male voice saying, “Tell your dad to come save you now.”

Then Fiona screamed.

The call cut off.

For two seconds, Daniel Grant did not move.

The old part of him, the part trained to separate terror from motion, stepped forward before the father in him could fall apart.

Twenty years in the Teams had taught him that fear was allowed.

It just did not get to drive.

He grabbed his keys, his wallet, and the gray jacket Fiona always teased him about because she said it made him look like a retired park ranger.
