Lieutenant Parker Hale touched two fingers to my elbow in front of three hundred soldiers and said, “Ma’am, this row is for command staff only.”

He did not say it loudly.

That made it worse.

His voice stayed polite enough to disappear beneath the brass band warming up near the edge of the white ceremony tent, but it carried just far enough for the officers, sergeants major, spouses, and civilian guests around us to hear what he wanted them to hear.

The Georgia air had already turned heavy by 0830.

Wet grass clung to the bottoms of polished shoes.

The canvas overhead snapped in the humid wind, and somewhere behind me, a plastic water bottle crackled in somebody’s nervous hand.

Parker Hale smiled like he had been trained in mirrors.

His grip stayed light.

But his thumb pressed into the sleeve of my dress blues like he was moving an inconvenient chair out of an aisle.

I looked down at his hand.

Then I looked at the silver bars on his chest.

Then I looked past him at the podium, the folded guidon, the battalion colors, and the front-row seat with my name card turned facedown.

“Lieutenant,” I said, “remove your hand.”

His smile twitched.

That was the first crack.

A young specialist near the aisle froze with a tray of bottled water in both hands.

Behind Parker, Command Sergeant Major Briggs watched me with eyes like wet stone.

Not surprised.

Not confused.

Waiting.

Parker let go, but he did not step back.

“Ma’am,” he said again, softer now, “I don’t know who told you to come up here, but the incoming commander hasn’t arrived yet. Families and guests are seated to the rear.”
