My father looked at my promotion invitation as if it had personally offended him.

He was in his recliner with ESPN flashing across the TV, one hand buried in pretzels, the other holding the remote like a weapon he had already decided to use.

The kitchen smelled like pasta sauce that had been on the stove too long.

He did not even look at me when he said it.

That was the first thing that hurt.

The second thing was that I still waited for my mother to correct him.

She froze for half a beat, then gave me that small, tired look women give when they want the hurt person to make less noise.

“Aaron, honey, don’t start,” she said.

I looked at her.

“Exactly,” Dad said.

He pointed the remote at me.

“You get that military face and suddenly everybody’s supposed to clap.”

The invitation sat on the coffee table between a hunting catalog and Danny’s unpaid invoice from a boat mechanic.

It said Major Aaron Callahan.

United States Army.

Fort Meade.

Ceremony time, 1000.

Eighteen years in uniform had led to that line on paper, and my father was looking at it like I had asked him to sit through a middle school band concert.

I picked the invitation up before he could set his beer on it.

“It’s one Saturday morning,” I said.
