I came home two days early with a bottle of red wine in the passenger seat and a white bakery box of almond cookies beside it.

That was the kind of surprise I thought I was bringing Sarah.

Nothing grand.

Nothing expensive.

Just the kind of small thing a husband brings home when he has been sleeping in a hotel room for three nights and misses the sound of his wife’s coffee mug touching the counter in the morning.

The transportation conference had ended early, and by 5:18 p.m. on Friday, I was turning into our driveway with my suitcase in the back and that easy feeling a man gets when he thinks the hard part of the week is behind him.

The afternoon heat was still sitting in the siding of the house.

The porch looked normal.

The same little American flag Sarah kept near the railing moved in a weak breeze, and the screen door gave its familiar scrape when I pushed it open.

For one second, I smelled lemon cleaner.

Sarah always cleaned when she was upset.

She said it helped her think, but after nearly thirty years of marriage, I knew better.

It helped her keep from saying what people had made her swallow.

Then I smelled copper.

Sarah was on the living room floor with her back against the beige sofa, one hand pressed to the side of her face.

Blood had marked her temple, her blouse, and the rug we bought during the year we made it to twenty years married.

That rug had survived grandkids with grape juice, Michael’s muddy shoes when he was a teenager, and one Thanksgiving gravy spill Sarah still brought up whenever I carved the turkey too close to the edge.

Now it had my wife’s blood on it.

She looked up and whispered my name.

Not with relief.

With shame.

That is what still hurts when I think about it.

She was injured in her own house, and the first thing she felt was embarrassment that I had seen it.

From the kitchen came laughter.
