The hallway outside Fort Belvoir’s Alpha Checkpoint smelled like burnt coffee, wet wool coats, and industrial floor wax.

It was barely past seven in the morning, but the building was already awake.

A television mounted in the corner played muted cable news while exhausted officers moved through the checkpoint carrying paper coffee cups and classified folders.

Nobody paid attention to me when I first walked through the outer doors.

That was intentional.

I wore a black trench coat over a dark charcoal pantsuit, my hair pinned tightly behind my head.

At 0718 hours, I looked exactly like what I wanted to look like.
