The morning after Emily married Daniel, she woke up feeling like the wedding was still stuck to her skin.

There was hairspray in her curls, a faint sweetness of roses on the garment bag near the closet, and a dull ache in both feet from smiling and dancing until her cheeks hurt.

Emily looked at the dress bag, the heels kicked sideways by the door, the little stack of wedding cards on the dresser.

She was still wearing the thin bracelet her father had clasped around her wrist before walking her down the aisle.

Daniel leaned over and kissed her forehead.

He picked her up outside the hospital lab after late shifts.

He learned exactly how she liked her eggs, then joked that he would be useless if she ever stopped loving breakfast.

Emily’s father, David, liked him at first.

David liked anyone who made his daughter laugh without making her smaller.

But David was also the kind of man who saved receipts in labeled envelopes, checked his bank app before making promises, and believed love should never require a woman to become financially blind.
