My sister did not wait for the candles, and that was how I knew the night had never really been about Grandma Evelyn at all.

Thirty relatives were packed around the long table in Grandma’s backyard, shoulder to shoulder, knees bumping chair legs, everyone pretending the family was easier than it was.

That was something Harpers did well.

We made things look polished from the curb.

Inside the fence, people learned where to sit, when to smile, and which truths were too expensive to say out loud.

I sat halfway down the table with a glass of wine in my hand and a slice of lemon cake waiting in front of me.

The cake had not been cut evenly.

One blue candle had already started to lean into the frosting from the heat.

I remember noticing that before I noticed my sister standing up.

Her gold earrings flashed under the string lights.

Her hair fell in polished curls over one shoulder, and she held her champagne flute high enough for the whole table to understand that a speech was coming.

People turned toward her automatically.
