My daughter knocked on my apartment door at 3:00 in the morning in the same wedding dress I had zipped for her twelve hours earlier.

At first, I thought I was still dreaming.

The hallway light outside my Dallas apartment buzzed the way cheap building lights always do when nobody has changed the fixture in years.

Rain tapped against the stairwell window.

She tried to answer, but her knees folded before the word came out.

I caught her under the arms, and the sound she made when my hand brushed her shoulder told me there were injuries I had not even seen yet.

The back of her wedding dress was torn open where the zipper had ripped away from the fabric, and one side of her face was swelling so fast I could see the shape changing under the hallway light.

“Mom,” she whispered.

For a second, my body refused to move.

I had been afraid of Carmen Robles.

I had not known I had been right to be terrified.

I pulled Sofia inside and locked the door behind us.

She stumbled toward the couch, one hand pressed to her ribs, the other clamped around my wrist like she was still being dragged somewhere.
