The first thing that changed was the sound of Carolyn Sherwood’s voice.

She was never loud.

She was the kind of neighbor who apologized if her porch light stayed on too long, the kind of woman who watered her tomatoes at sunrise and remembered which kids liked peppermint and which ones hated it.

So when she called me after midnight, there was no confusion in her tone at all.

Only fear.

“Your daughter is sitting in your driveway,” she said. “She has blood all over her. She’s alone. It’s midnight.”

I was in a hotel parking garage outside Minneapolis, half packed for the next day’s meetings, with a suitcase in one hand and my phone in the other.

The air smelled like rain on concrete and burnt coffee from the lobby.

I remember that because the smell was ordinary, and the words on the phone were not.

I called my wife.

No answer.

I called again.

No answer.

I kept calling while I ran for the car, because a part of me still believed there had to be some explanation that would make sense if I could just get somebody to say it out loud.

Melissa did not answer the first call.

By the time I hit the interstate, the hotel checkout was still unfinished on my phone and my GPS was telling me I had seven hours and twelve minutes to get home if the weather stayed clear.

I could not stop seeing Sarah in my head.

Eight years old.

Small enough that I still had to remind her not to run ahead in parking lots.

Small enough that she still asked for water in the middle of the night with both hands on the cup.

Small enough to be sitting bleeding in the driveway while I was five hundred miles away and nobody inside my own house thought to open the door.

When I finally called Norma, my mother-in-law, she answered like I had interrupted tea.
