The night Daniel left for his brother’s engagement party without me, he stood in our bedroom with one cufflink in his hand and shame all over his face.

The lamps were warm, but the room felt cold enough to make my skin tighten.

I could hear the tiny scrape of metal against cotton as he tried to fix his cuff and pretend this was a normal Saturday night.

It was not normal.

A husband should not have to rehearse the cowardice of walking out the door alone.

I stood by the dresser with my arms folded, watching him avoid the mirror.

“What exactly did your mother say?” I asked.

Daniel’s shoulders moved once, like he had swallowed something too large.

“She said it would be better if it stayed family only.”

I let the words hang there.

Family only.

We had been married four years.

I had sat beside Daniel through his father’s surgery, written checks when his brother needed help fixing his car, hosted Thanksgiving when Margaret decided my table was good enough for her appetite but not good enough for her respect.

I had learned which side dish his father liked.

I had remembered every birthday.

I had once driven Margaret to a charity luncheon because her car battery died, and she still spent the ride correcting the way I pronounced the club president’s last name.

But that night, when her younger son got engaged, I was not family.

I was optional.

Daniel finally looked at me, and there was regret in his face, but regret is cheap when it arrives already dressed to leave.

“Please,” he said. “Just tonight. You know how she is.”

I did know how she was.

That had never been the problem.

The problem was that Daniel knew too and still kept asking me to survive her instead of asking her to stop.
