I never told Brendan Morrison or his family that I owned the company where they all worked.

Not because I was ashamed of it.

Because by the time I had the power to tell them, I had already learned what they did with power when they thought no one could stop them.

They liked women grateful.

They especially liked me pregnant, divorced, and financially underestimated.

To them, I was Cassidy Vale, Brendan’s inconvenient ex-wife, the woman who still showed up in a soft maternity dress because there were conversations about the baby that still had to happen.

To them, I was the poor, pregnant burden they tolerated because not tolerating me would look bad.

Diane Morrison cared a great deal about how things looked.

Her dining room looked like money that wanted applause.

The chandelier glittered over a long glass table, and the candles smelled like vanilla, cedar, and something too expensive to name.

A roast sat in the center on a white platter, the kind of roast nobody had cooked themselves.

The napkins were folded into perfect little peaks beside crystal glasses.

Outside the big front window, a small American flag moved slightly on the porch in the evening air.

Inside, the room felt warm enough to make my hands sweat.

Then Diane poured a bucket of freezing, dirty water over my head.

The first shock stole the air from my lungs.

It hit my scalp, ran down my face, soaked the collar of my dress, and slid in cold lines over my hands where they rested under the table.

My daughter kicked so hard inside me that I gripped the edge of my chair.

For one second, I heard nothing but water hitting hardwood.

Then Diane laughed.

“Look on the bright side,” she said, her mouth curved in that polished Morrison smile. “At least you finally took a bath.”

Brendan laughed with her.

That sound landed worse than the water.
