The drive from Minneapolis to Chicago felt longer than any road I had ever been on.

The GPS said seven hours.

It might as well have said forever.

Rain moved across the windshield in thin silver lines, and every passing truck threw mist over my headlights until the whole highway looked blurred and unreal.

I had left my suitcase half-zipped in the back seat.

I had not checked out of the hotel.

I had not even stopped long enough to tell the front desk I was leaving.

One minute I had been standing in a lobby that smelled like lemon cleaner and burnt coffee, watching strangers laugh near the elevators.

The next minute, my neighbor was whispering into my phone like she was afraid the wrong person might hear her.

“James, I don’t know what to do.”

Carolyn Sherwood lived across from us.

She was sixty-four, retired from the public school library, and more reliable than most emergency systems.

She knew which kids rode which buses.

She knew whose dog got loose.

She knew when somebody’s trash cans had been sitting at the curb a day too long.

Carolyn was not a woman who panicked for sport.

“Sarah is sitting in your driveway,” she said.

I remember thinking there had to be some other Sarah.

“She has blood on her face,” Carolyn said. “Blood on her clothes. She won’t move. She won’t talk. I tried calling Melissa, but she isn’t answering.”
