Then a police cruiser rolled to the curb.

The younger officer was out before the tires seemed fully stopped.

His shoulders were high.

His hand was already near his belt.

The older officer came after him more slowly, his eyes moving from me to the front door, then to the mailbox, then back to the young man who had taken command of the morning.

“My name is Theodore Rollins,” I said.

My voice sounded calm because I had trained it that way.

Judges learn to keep their voices steady when everyone else in the room wants permission to fall apart.
