The Handmade Bow That Silenced A Sponsored Archer In Oregon-ruby

The morning at Pine Crest Sportsman’s Park smelled like pine resin, wet gravel, and coffee that had been sitting too long in a clubhouse pot.

I remember that because I remember everything about the day I made a fool of myself.

The parking lot was full of pickup trucks, SUVs, branded bow cases, folding chairs, and men and women checking gear like they were pilots before takeoff.

Rangefinders clicked.

Release aids snapped open and shut.

Somebody had a portable speaker playing low country music from the bed of a truck, and a small American flag moved gently from the clubhouse porch every time the wind came through the trees.

My six-pin sight had been dialed in the night before.

My release was clipped to my wrist.

My GoPro was mounted because I had built a nice little following out of clean shots, gear reviews, and the kind of confidence people call advice when a camera is pointed at them.

He did not have a rangefinder.

He did not have a backup bow, a stabilizer, a release, or anything that looked like it belonged in the same century as the gear leaning against the porch rail.

He carried one piece of laminated wood and a canvas quiver full of cedar arrows.

I noticed him the way a person notices an old truck at a new-car lot.

Not with curiosity.

With judgment.

I turned to my buddy and said, loud enough to land, “Is that a longbow with wood arrows?”

My buddy grinned.

I kept going because pride always wants an audience.
