Michael stopped breathing.

He emailed it to himself.
He sent it to the officer listed on the police report.

He did not call Principal Sarah right away because anger was too easy, and easy things can ruin evidence.
Instead, he called the mother who sent it.
Her name was Ashley, and when she answered, she was already crying.
“My daughter uses a little recorder for reading practice,” she said.
“It was in her backpack. I didn’t even know it caught anything until tonight.”
“Why now?” Michael asked.
Ashley was quiet for a moment.
“Because I defended Patricia today,” she whispered.
“And then my daughter heard the voice memo and asked me why the teacher sounded so mean to Lucy.”

Michael did not comfort her.
He did not punish her either.

She did.
The next morning, the school office felt different.

He held up one hand.

She looked at Michael.
