The call came at 2:17 in the morning.

I remember that because the red numbers on the clock were the last ordinary thing I saw before the world stopped being ordinary.

The hallway outside my room smelled like burned coffee, wet boots, and the stale cleaner they used on floors that never really looked clean.

My phone vibrated once on the metal table beside my bed.

Then it vibrated again.

I almost let it go, because when you are overseas, unknown numbers usually mean paperwork, delayed travel, or somebody calling from the wrong time zone.

Then I saw the area code from back home.

I answered on the third ring.

For a second, nobody spoke.

There was only a small breath on the line, the kind of breath people take when they have already decided there is no gentle way to say what they must say.

“Mr. Carter?” a woman asked.

“That’s me.”

“My name is Angela. I’m calling from the hospital.”

My body knew before my mind did.

It went cold from the inside out, the way it does when a sound changes in the field and every man around you understands danger at the same time.

“Your wife is alive,” she said.

Alive.

That word should have opened my lungs.

Instead, it closed them.

“But you need to come now,” she said.

I asked what happened.

She did not answer quickly.

She told me a doctor would speak with me when I arrived.

I asked about the baby.
