Diana remembered the smell first.

Burnt toast.

Coffee gone slightly bitter in the pot.

Warm sunlight across the kitchen floor of the Craftsman house she and Derek had bought when they still believed love could make every future arrive on schedule.

Cooper scratched at the back door, dragging his paws against the glass in that needy, dramatic way that usually made Derek laugh.

That morning, Derek did not laugh.

He sat across from Diana with both hands folded beside his coffee mug, his hair still damp from the shower and his navy sweater neat enough to look deliberate.

It was the sweater she had bought him in Asheville years earlier, back when they could spend an entire weekend walking through side streets, pointing out porch columns and old brickwork, pretending they were only talking about buildings when they were really talking about the life they wanted.

Derek had always looked trustworthy in a room.

That was part of the problem.

Some men do not need to lie loudly.

They simply sit still, keep their voice calm, and make suspicion sound like common sense.

“I need a paternity test,” he said.

Diana’s hand tightened around her mug.

The kitchen was so familiar that the words felt impossible inside it.

The white cabinets she had repainted herself.

The cheap runner rug by the sink.

The stack of mail Derek always dropped near the toaster.

The little calendar on the fridge where she had circled her next prenatal appointment in pencil because ink had felt too bold.

“A DNA test,” she repeated.

Derek nodded once.

“I think it would be better for both of us,” he said.

“For both of us.”

He did not say he was scared.
