No one on the county road paid much attention to the barefoot girl in the snow.

A truck passed once, slow enough that Grace saw the driver glance her way, then fast enough that the taillights vanished before she could decide whether to lift her hand.

She did not blame him.

People saw trouble differently when it came wrapped in a wet coat and carrying a baby.

The wind came down from the ridge like it had been sharpened on the trees.

It pushed snow into her hair, into her collar, into the faded pink blanket tucked around Luna’s tiny body.

Grace kept one hand over the baby’s head and one arm locked under her back.

Her own feet were the part of her she tried not to think about.

At first they had burned.

Then they had stabbed.

Now they felt distant, which scared her more than pain.

Pain meant her body was still sending messages.

Numbness meant it had started giving up.

She kept walking.

At 6:18 that evening, the sky over the mountain road turned the color of old tin.

The mailbox came into view first, leaning under snow at the end of a long driveway.

Beyond it was a small cabin with smoke rising from the chimney and a porch light glowing yellow against the blue dusk.

There was a small American flag fixed near the porch post, frozen stiff at the edges.

Beside the barn sat an old pickup with mud dried along the doors.

Grace stopped at the bottom of the driveway and almost turned back.

That was the worst thing about desperation.

It did not make asking easier.

It only made refusal more expensive.
