A Little Girl Called 911 About Daddy’s Snake. Police Found the Truth-mdue

“Daddy’s snake is biting me,” the little girl cried to 911, but when police kicked in the door, they found the monster had no scales — it had a human face.

A careless adult.

A child too small to know what kind of danger she had found.

The dispatch room at 8:17 p.m. smelled like stale coffee and warm electronics, the kind of smell that clung to every overnight shift no matter how often someone wiped down the counters.

Radio static moved through the room in little bursts.

Keyboards clicked.

Somewhere behind Claire, another dispatcher was calmly guiding a man through chest compressions.

Then Emily Miller’s voice came through Claire’s headset, and the whole room seemed to narrow around it.

“911, what is your emergency?” Claire asked.

Small breathing.

The kind a child makes when she is trying very hard not to be heard.

Then came a sob she tried to swallow.

“Daddy’s snake… is biting me,” Emily whispered. “It’s so big, and it hurts so bad.”

Claire’s hand moved before her face changed.

She opened the CAD log, marked the call as a minor in danger, and checked the address that had flashed onto the screen.

1427 Maplewood Drive.

Springfield, Illinois.

“Sweetheart, are you safe right now?” Claire asked.

She kept her voice low.

Not sweet enough to sound fake.

Not sharp enough to scare the child into silence.
