My father sat near the end of the table, pretending to listen while checking the muted football game reflected in the china cabinet glass.

My brother Derek was talking about a promotion he might get.

His wife Ashley nodded in that polite, careful way people nod when they know the room can turn on anyone.

My sister Monica sat at the far end of the table.
