My sister ran over my six-year-old daughter in my parents’ driveway, and everyone rushed to comfort her because her BMW got dented.

I remember the chair scraping behind me.

I remember running through the kitchen, past the polished island, past the flowers my mother had arranged like a magazine cover, and out into the white heat of the driveway.

Brittany’s black BMW was parked diagonally across the concrete.

The front bumper was caved in.

A broken flower pot rolled near the tire, rocking on its side like it had not yet accepted what had happened.
