I had been home less than fifteen minutes when my daughter told me the secret her mother thought would stay buried.

My suitcase was still sitting by the front door.

A hallway that should have been full of little footsteps but was not.

Usually, Lily heard my key before I got the door open.

She was eight years old, all quick feet and messy hair and questions that started before she reached me.

She would run straight into my stomach, wrap both arms around me, and talk into my shirt about school, cereal, cartoons, playground drama, and whether I had brought her the hotel pen I always forgot and she always asked for.
