No garlic warming in the skillet.

No sweet candle on the counter, the kind Sharon always bought at the mall and lit until the smell clung to the curtains.

There was only cold hallway air, a dark kitchen, and the sound of rain tapping softly against the window over the sink.

Then I saw Kyle in the armchair.

He was five years old, curled tight around a throw pillow, his knees pulled to his chest, his little fingers white from squeezing the fabric.

His hair stuck up on one side.

His cheeks looked hollow.

A crumpled note.

A stack of divorce papers.

And Keith’s wedding ring.

Sharon’s note was written in the same cheerful looping handwriting she used for thank-you cards, recipe cards, and labels on Christmas cookie tins.
