Megan stood in her parents’ backyard with the smoke from the grill clinging to her hair and the sting spreading across her cheek.

A tortilla lay folded over the edge of her paper plate.

A slice of grilled steak slid onto the patio near her sandal.

Her seven-year-old niece, Emma, stood in front of her with both arms crossed, chin lifted, and eyes full of an anger that looked too practiced for a child.

“My mom says you deserve it for messing with married men,” Emma said.

For a second, Megan could not understand the words.

She heard them.

She saw mouths open around the patio.

She saw her mother freeze with the lemonade pitcher tilted in midair.

“Meggy?” Emma used to say when Sarah got stuck at work and Megan picked her up from school.

Now that same child had slapped her.

Now that same child had been given a sentence sharp enough to draw blood without breaking skin.

“Emma,” Megan said, touching her cheek, “why would you say that to me?”

Sarah moved before Emma could answer.

She crossed the patio in three hard steps and pulled her daughter back like Megan was something contagious.

“Don’t go near my child,” Sarah said.
