Her Husband Said No Crib Money, Then His Transfer Exposed Everything-mdue

“There’s no money for the crib,” Michael had said for the third time that week, like repeating it made it responsible instead of cruel.

Emily sat across from him at the small kitchen table, seven months pregnant, one hand under her belly and the other wrapped around a mug of chamomile tea she had not wanted.

The apartment was quiet except for the rain ticking against the window and the low hum of the refrigerator.

Outside, the streetlights blurred against wet pavement, and a neighbor’s porch flag snapped in the wind every few seconds.

Inside, her husband looked tired in the practiced way men look tired when they want the conversation to end.

“We can use the bassinet for a while,” he said.

“The bassinet is borrowed,” Emily answered. “And she needs a safe place to sleep.”

Michael rubbed his forehead.

“You keep acting like I’m withholding money from you. The company is having a rough quarter. I told you that.”

She looked at the spreadsheet open on her laptop.

Diapers.

Wipes.

A crib.

A mattress.

A car seat they had already stretched the budget to buy.

Nothing on that list was fancy.

Nothing on that list was for her.

“I’m not asking for jewelry,” she said.

“Don’t start,” he snapped.

That was the tone that made the room shrink.

He had used it more often since she began showing, more often since Mercedes started coming by with her soft voice and sharp suggestions.

Mercedes was Michael’s mother, and she had a gift for making control sound like care.

“You two should organize the paperwork before the baby comes,” she would say while folding Emily’s towels wrong.

Or, “Michael understands finances better, honey. Pregnancy is not the time to stress yourself out with banks.”
