The mail sat in the little basket by the door.

One of Sharon’s sweet vanilla candles had burned down on the kitchen counter, leaving a waxy ring on the glass tray.

Nothing was thrown.

Nothing was broken.

A crumpled piece of paper sat beside a stack of divorce papers.

Keith’s wedding ring was on top, bright and useless under the ceiling light.

Keith and I are in love. We’re starting over. Kyle needs stability, and you always wanted to help. Please don’t make this harder than it has to be.

Keith had signed the divorce papers underneath.

Every signature was complete.
