By the time the dispatcher picked up, I was sitting half sideways in my own kitchen chair with one hand clamped around my phone and the other pressed against the table hard enough to make my fingers ache.

The sauce was still steaming on the floor.

I remember the dispatcher asking me to confirm the address, and I remember my voice sounding smaller than I expected.

Not weak.

Just far away.

Like it was coming from the other end of a hallway.

“My husband hit me,” I said. “His mother threw boiling food on me. I need help.”

Michael’s face changed before I finished the sentence.

The anger did not vanish.

It reorganized itself into panic.

“Emily,” he said, low and sharp. “Hang up.”

That was the first time he sounded like he understood what he had done.

Not because I was hurt.

Because somebody outside that kitchen had finally heard me.

Sarah set the plate down too hard, and the cracked edge knocked against the table.

“This is a family misunderstanding,” she said, raising her voice toward the phone. “She is exaggerating.”

The dispatcher asked if I was safe.

I looked at Michael blocking the doorway, at the red mark blooming hot across my cheek, at the green sauce soaking through my pajama pants, and at the paper on the floor that still said RULES FOR THIS MARRIAGE.

“No,” I said.

It was the clearest word I had spoken all morning.

Michael took one step toward me.
