The old farmhouse door opened with a groan that seemed to come from deep inside the walls.

Michael Ferreira stood on the porch with his hand still on the knob, breathing in rain, dust, and wet grass.

He had not crossed that threshold in two years.

Not since Sarah died in the bedroom upstairs.

Not since he shut the curtains, locked the door, and paid a caretaker to keep the place standing without ever asking him to make it feel alive again.

The driveway behind him was empty except for his SUV and the thin shine of rainwater along the gravel.

At the road, the mailbox leaned slightly to one side, and the little American flag Sarah had once tied to the porch railing hung faded and limp in the damp air.

Michael told himself he had come because his therapist said he should.

Dr. Daniel had said grief needed a room to be faced in, not just a schedule to hide inside.

Michael had tried the schedule.

He had tried board meetings, contracts, long dinners with people who lowered their voices when they said Sarah’s name, and houses too large for one man to hear himself think in.

None of it had worked.

Money can make a house bigger.

It cannot make it less empty.

Inside, the sheets still covered the furniture.

Dust sat on the mantel.

The air had the stale sweetness of old lavender and cedar, because Sarah used to tuck sachets everywhere and laugh when he pretended not to notice.

He stepped forward, and the floor answered with a dry, familiar creak.

For one second, he almost expected to hear her call from the kitchen.

Then he saw the girls.

They were standing near the back door.

Two small figures in the dim hall.

Barefoot. Dirty. Silent.

The older child looked about four, with one arm wrapped around the younger child like she had been given a job too heavy for her body.
