Paper plates stacked by the sliding door.

A flower arrangement on the dessert table that said Happy 60th, David.

Then her three-year-old daughter hit the tile, and every harmless detail became something Sarah would remember for the rest of her life.

Emma did not answer.

Behind her, Michael was already on the phone with 911.

His voice trembled, but it did not crack.

“Three-year-old girl,” he said. “Head injury. A lot of blood. Please hurry.”

The dispatcher asked questions.

Michael answered them.
