After His Mother Broke Her Leg, The Hospital Trap Exposed Them-mdue

My mother-in-law broke my leg in the kitchen and my husband said it was my punishment, but three days later the hospital set a trap for them.

The third hit from the rolling pin was the one that changed the shape of my life.

My cheek hit it so hard that the side of my face went numb before my leg even began screaming.

My right hand landed in a smear of green salsa that had spilled from the bowl during dinner, and the smell of lime, vinegar, and cilantro rose up under my nose like something from a normal evening.

A normal evening would have had dishes in the sink, a TV murmuring from the living room, and somebody asking who wanted more soup.

This one had Sarah standing over me with a wooden rolling pin in both hands.

She was my mother-in-law.

She was sixty-one, small, neat, and frightening in the way some people are frightening because everybody around them has agreed to pretend they are harmless.

Her beige cardigan was still buttoned wrong at the top.

Her bracelet from church had slid down her wrist.

Her breathing was sharp and loud, like I had broken into her house instead of marrying into it.

“Maybe now you’ll learn not to correct me in front of my son,” she said.

All I had done was tell her the soup was too salty.

Michael, my father-in-law, had high blood pressure.

He was sitting at the table with his medication bottle beside his napkin, and Sarah had poured broth into his bowl like she was daring the doctor to be wrong.

I said, gently, that maybe he should skip that batch.

I said it because I cared.

In that house, care was treated like rebellion if it came from me.

Michael stood by the refrigerator now, arms crossed over his plaid shirt, staring down at my leg.

My foot was turned at an angle that made no sense.
