“911, what’s your emergency?”

Claire Johnson had asked that question so many times that most nights it came out of her mouth before she consciously formed the words.

She had worked the emergency center in Springfield, Illinois, for ten years, and the room itself had become part of her body.

The smell of stale coffee.

The soft burn of fluorescent lights.

The endless rhythm of ringing lines, clicking keyboards, clipped radio codes, and strangers calling on the worst night of their lives.

Claire had learned how fear sounded when it came from a car crash, a kitchen fire, a robbery, a heart attack, or a family argument that had finally become too loud for the walls to hold.

Fear had textures.

Some callers shouted.

Some whispered.

Some spoke so calmly that Claire could hear the shock numbing them sentence by sentence.

But the voice that came through her headset that night was different from all of them.

It was very small.

At first, Claire heard breathing more than words.

A child was crying somewhere close to the phone, trying to make herself quiet and failing.

The line crackled once, then steadied.

“I was just a little child,” the girl said.

Claire’s hand moved automatically to the keyboard.

“Sweetheart,” Claire said, keeping her voice low and warm, “I’m here with you. Tell me what’s happening.”

The child sniffed.
