An Army Colonel Found Her Bruised Daughter. Then She Made One Call-mdue

The drive from Fort Liberty to Mercy General felt longer than any road Colonel Victoria Hart had ever crossed in uniform.

Rain slapped against the windshield in thin hard lines, and the wipers dragged it away just long enough for the next burst to blur the road again.

Her hands stayed fixed at ten and two because that was what training did to a person.

It gave the body something to obey when the mind wanted to break apart.

At 6:18 p.m., the call had come from a hospital number she did not recognize.

The nurse on the line had spoken carefully, the way people speak when every word has weight.

“Colonel Hart, this is Mercy General. Your daughter, Emily Hart Prescott, has been admitted with serious injuries.”

Victoria had asked whether Emily was conscious.

The nurse had paused.

That pause had done more damage than the answer.

“Yes, ma’am. She is conscious. She is asking for you.”

Victoria had not asked for explanations over the phone.

She had heard too many bad reports in her life to waste time demanding comfort from the person delivering them.

She took her keys, grabbed her service cap, and left the administrative building without changing out of her uniform.

In the rearview mirror, the Fort Liberty gate disappeared behind her.

By the time she reached Mercy General, the parking garage smelled like wet concrete, spilled coffee, and exhaust.

She took the stairs instead of the elevator because standing still felt impossible.

Her boots struck the concrete steps in a steady rhythm, loud and final.

Third floor.

Medical surgical wing.

Room 317.

A nurse at the station looked up when she saw the uniform and then looked down at the chart in her hand.

There was sympathy on her face.

Victoria hated sympathy before facts.

“Emily Hart Prescott,” Victoria said.

The nurse nodded and lowered her voice.

“She’s in the room at the end. The physician has already documented her visible injuries. Security has been notified because of the circumstances.”

“What circumstances?”

The nurse glanced toward the hallway.

“She asked to tell you herself.”

Victoria did not thank her.

She simply walked.

The hallway lights were too bright, the floors too clean, the air too sharp with disinfectant.

For a moment, all she could hear was the soft squeak of her boots and the distant beep of monitors from other rooms.
