The Night Kate Sterling Stopped Being Afraid Of Her Husband Forever-Quieen

Rain made the Sterling driveway shine like black glass.

Kate stood in the kitchen with a cold mug of tea and listened for her husband’s car.

She was seven months pregnant, tired in her bones, and trained by three years of marriage to know the weather inside the house mattered more than the weather outside it.

Richard Sterling came through the front door just before ten, soaked from the shoulders down, handsome in the way cruel men can still look expensive.

He did not kiss her.

He did not ask about the baby.

He went to the liquor cabinet and poured whiskey before saying the Hennessy deal had fallen apart.

Kate said she was sorry because sorry was usually safer than silence.

Richard laughed without humor and asked what she could possibly do, as if her only value had ever been standing still while he decided how angry he wanted to be.

She felt the baby roll beneath her ribs and kept one hand near her stomach.

Blood filled her mouth.

Her right cheek burned.

Her left hand covered her belly before thought arrived.

Richard stood over her and told her to get up because she looked pathetic.

Kate looked at him from the floor and felt something inside her go still.

It was not defeat.

It was the end of patience.

She pushed herself up, using the counter because her legs were shaking, and told him she was going upstairs.

He said they were not finished.

She repeated herself in the same calm voice, and for the first time in their marriage, the calm did not belong to fear.

It belonged to decision.

In the bedroom, Kate closed the door and stood with her forehead against the wood until she could breathe without shaking.

Then she opened the nightstand drawer.
